DE MEZERAY, [Francois Eudes]. Translated into English by John Bulteel. A General Chronological History of France, Beginning before the Reign of King Pharamond, and Ending with the Reign of King Henry the Fourth: Containing both the Civil and the Ecclesiastical Transactions of that Kingdom. By the Sieur DE MEZERAY, Historiographer of France. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. 1683 London. Printed by T. N. for Thomas, Samuel Lowndes, Christopher Wilkinson, William Cademan, and Jacob Tonson. 1683. First English edition. Large 4to. Engraved extra illustrated title page, title page. [2]pages dedication from the translator, [2]pages dedicatory epistle from the author. Illustrated initial letter. 1-968 pages. [2]pages table of Kings of France, [59]pages with content tables in three parts relating to the original three parts of this work that have been presented in this volume with continuous pagination. Bound in full dark tan modern calf gilt, contrasting lettering piece and new endpapers. Illustrated title page browned and chipped along outer edge, title page has one close 7cm tear across the centre which has been professionally repaired. Page edges browned with some occasional foxing to margins otherwise a remarkably clean and sound copy of this important 17th century French history. (Wing M1958, Lowndes II, 1541) This was a highly esteemed work which angered the then minister of finance Jean-Baptiste Colbert whose political ethos it did not support. Mezeray's chief aims seemed to be to produce a highly readable and accurate historical account while subtly criticizing the worst of the French system of Government under Louis XIV. The first French edition appeared in three parts between 1667 and 1668. The first English edition is rare. 77347
