110 GIBBON, Edward. A Vindication of Some Passages in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Chapters of The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.
Dublin. Printed for W. and H. Whitestone, J. Williams, W. Colles.... 1779
First Irish edition. 158pp. Bound in contemporary tree calf, rebacked in modern calf with original lettering piece laid down. Some v. occ. light foxing o/w a clean and sound volume. Very scarce. Norton 32. A reprint of the first London edition with the corrections made. Gibbon, unlike many writers, did read the criticisms of his works. Copies of many of the attacks on 'The History of the Decline and Fall...' were found in his library when he died. It was an attack by one of the least worthy of his critcs that lead Gibbon to write 'A Vindication'. Davis of Oxford was only twenty-one but it was he who questioned Gibbon's honesty and reliability as an historian. Gibbon felt this was a criminal accusation. "Mr. Davies (sic) of Oxford presumed to attack, not the faith, but the good faith of the historian". 'A Vindication...' was priced at 2s 6d and sold out within a few weeks. While it failed to silence his opponents, it was very well received generally. 7799

111 GIBBON, Edward. An Essay on the Study of Literature. Written Originally in French, By Edward Gibbon, Jun. Esq; Now first translated into English.
Printed for T. Becket and P. A. De Hondt. London. 1764
First edition in English of Gibbon's first work. 8vo. [8], 168pp. including 4pp. of publishers' list of books. Uncut. 18cm x 11.9cm. Original blank leaves, one before title page and one after p168 present. Bound in contemporary full calf gilt, rebacked with modern speckled calf spine, raised bands, contrasting leather lettering piece. Bds. sl. worn and soiled. Marbled e/ps., hinges reinforced. Light browning to outer margins of prelims, a close 2mm tear in margin of title page + one other close 4mm tear to margin of pp.111/112, lower corner missing from pp.49/50 without any loss of text. The contents are remarkably clean and fresh. Norton 6. Though originally published in French in 1761, Gibbon wrote most of this essay in 1758 while only 21. The translator has never been identified but was probably a professional hired by Becket. Gibbon was not happy with it though it was advertised as being prepared 'under the inspection of the author'. He states, "had my feelings been more exquisite, I might have wept over its blunders and baldness." Also from his journal, January 11th, 1763. " From thence I went to Becket, paid him his bill (fifty-four pounds) and gave him back his translation. It must be printed, tho' very indifferent. My comfort is, that my misfortune is not an uncommon one." One of the 'best' mistakes, quoted by Norton, is the rendering of "si la physique a ses Buffons" by "if Physics hath its buffoons." 7776

Though not published until 1761, Gibbon wrote this first work, in French, in 1758 when he was 21. He let Dr. Maty of the British Museum read it and on gaining approval revised and completed it in 1759. It was only published due to his fathers urging. The dedication to his father is both sincere and touching. The book, mostly due to being written in French, was more successful abroad than in England. The publishers covered the costs of producing the book and took the profits, Gibbon retained the copyright and received a number of free copies. According to Norton 42 copies were made available to Gibbon. 21 copies were presented by the author to several eminent characters in England and France, one was presented to the Duke of York and 20 were given by the author to his friends in Lausanne. This copy is one of these 42. 7778
