F. W. Warne & Co. London. No Date [1866]. First edition. Printed at The Camden Press. Large 8vo. 24.5 by 19 cms. 252 pages. Illustrated with engravings, decorative initial letters, ornamental head and tail-pieces etc by P.Hundley, highly decorative title page and facing frontispiece chromolithographed in red, blue, brown and gold by J. Burliston. 8 gilt decorated plates plus numerous illustrations in text engraved by the Dalziel Brothers and many of the illustrations were also by Thomas and Edward Dalziel. Each page is ruled and decorated in red and black. Thick, bevelled, red sandgrain cloth boards with decorative gilt boards with ornate recessed, ivory coloured centre panels enclosing the book title. All edges gilt. Slight signs of wear to extremities, head and tail of spine crumpled. Rear cover damp-stained. Frontis has wear to the outer edge and is also foxed as are the rear endpapers otherwise a clean and sound copy of a scarce item in its original highly decorated cloth covers. Noted as the most ornate of the Dalziels' fine art books. 77435

The normal frontispiece for this work has been replaced by an original watercolour with a coloured and gilt border and gilt title by James Douglas. This original watercololour (14cm x 22cm) displays Prince Agibs on a flying black horse with transluscent wings. We are able to send a photograph of the frontis. on request. The volume has been bound by Sotherans in half red morocco gilt, marbled e/ps and edges, extremities slightly rubbed. Some light foxing to prelims, pages slightly browned. Bookplate.
