Bound in full contemporary vellum with hand-written titles to head of spine, overlapping fore-edges. Small split in vellum at head of spine. All blanks before title page present. Some contemporary ink notes in marhins and underlining. With the armorial bookplate of Henry Drummond of Albury Park, Surrey. Pages sl. age-browned, bds. sl. marked overwise a clean and sound copy of this early history. Henry Drummond, (1786-1860), was a Historian, Politician, Theologian and the Sheriff of Surrey in 1826. 38641

Very large folding engraved frontis. plus 9 other folding plates, as called for. Numerous engraved plates and illustrations in text. Boards worn and rubbed, especially to extremities. Hand-coloured plate slightly torn along crease and along inner hinge. Large folding plate opposite page 135 slightly torn along hinge without loss. These portraits are delightfully partisan, each engr. has a border displaying beheaded skulls, chains, axes, the Tower, a hanging scene, etc. Under the name of each of these "baddies" is the way they died, mainly executed, some died in prison, one was assassinated and a couple managed to escape and subsequently died in exile. The book is bound in contemporary half black calf gilt, marbled bds., sl. signs of wear to extremities o/w a clean and sound copy of a very scarce Civil War item. 7549
