(Wing M1958, Lowndes II, 1541) This was a highly esteemed work which angered the then minister of finance Jean-Baptiste Colbert whose political ethos it did not support. Mezeray's chief aims seemed to be to produce a highly readable and accurate historical account while subtly criticizing the worst of the French system of Government under Louis XIV. The first French edition appeared in three parts between 1667 and 1668. The first English edition is rare.
