First edition. DW. 399pp. Top margin of boards sl. foxed, extremities v. sl. worn, water stain to top edge, not affecting pages. Lovely historical inscript. to ffe/p, listed in detail below. Wrapper spine sunned, soiled and sl. rubbed at head and tail, sl. affecting text of publisher, extremities sl. worn o/w VG+/VG+. The previous owner has written the following to the front free endpaper. "This book carries an amusing history. Harcourt Brace got me a pre-publication copy to read on my trip back. I chose to travel on 'La France' instead of by air this time. On board was Groucho Marx and we met in the swimming pool and nearby sauna - he, too, had a copy of Greening of America- which led to daily swims together (10 lengths) a sweat in the sauna, & lots of serious talk about Youth & Youth! All v. serious & I pretended I didn't know he was Groucho and he pretended he didn't know I was pretending - so we got on fine for 3 days & then parted. He did ask me if the London hotel "The Green on the Park" would object if he took a "lady" up to his suite - because once at Claridges he had been told to abandon his lady at 2.00am as "they" were not allowed up to guests rooms! I was unable to reassure him from my own experiences but was optimistic! He had Perlmann with him. It made my trip & I stole an ashtray marked 'La France'; shortly afterwards this ship (& others) was taken off the Atlantic run. (Groucho must have been over 80yrs in 1970)." 13072
