PINTER, Harold. The Collection and The Lover. Methuen. London. 1963 First edition DW. WITH A TYPED LETTER SIGNED FROM PINTER to Jacques Brunius. The letter is on headed paper and dated April 17.63. "Dear Jaques, Sorry I've been so long answering you. Life has been life. Very glad you liked 'The Lover'. Good. I have no copies, but 'The Lover' and 'The Collection' are to be published by Methuens on April 25th. Do of course give it to your niece and see what she has to say. French TV would be very nice. We are doing it on the stage at the Arts in the autumn, with 'The Dwarfs'. For fun! How are you? Yours, Harold" The "Harold" is in Pinter's own hand. Pages sl. browned o/w fine in wrapper. Writer, theorist and art critic, Jacques Brunius was born in Paris. From his teens he was closely associated with the Surrealists and contributed to journals of the movement. He remained a central figure in Surrealism until the moment of his death. His wide variety of interests led him into the cinema where he worked as assistant to Rene Clair and to Clair's brother, Henri Chomette, as well as to Prevert and to Luis Brunuel on his first important film, "L'Age d'Or". He also assisted Jean Renoir on "Partie de Campagne". Historically, his most important work was "Violons d'Ingres" made in 1937 for the New York World's Fair and which is seen as a prototype of the modern art film. Brunius settled in England in 1940, associating with Richard Massingham, for whom he made a number of films. He frequently participated in the B.B.C.'s "Critics" programme. he collaborated with Mesens on the book "Idolatory and Confusion" published in 1944 by London Gallery Editions. In addition to his career in art criticism he was an actor and appeared in the war film "The Wooden Horse", "Cockleshell Heroes" as well as other French and British films. 33546 Price:
