Full calf with inlaid design on both boards. Upper board detatched. Missing sections to spine. Bookplate of Lt. Gen. Leverne. Inscription from Richard Rye to Levern dated 1719 to front end paper. Complete this scarce book would be £1,500. Price reflects condition and is sold as seen. Sébastien Le Prestre, Seigneur (Marquis) de Vauban (1633–1707), Marshal of France and foremost military engineer. Famous for designing fortifications and in breaking through them. Advised Louis XIV. Involved in the Siege of Maastricht (1673), the Siege of Valenciennes (1677) the fortification of the cities of Strasbourg (1681) and Landau (1688). Often attributed to the pen of Vauban, the work is a translation of the Chevalier de Cambray's "Maniere de fortifier de Mr. de Vauban" first published in English in 1691. 37156
