LEE, Laurie. Cider With Rosie. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. 1959 The Hogarth Press. London. DW. 1959. First edition, first issue with the paragraph about the fire in the piano works factory present on page 272. Date "Nov. 1959" neatly written on front free endpaper. Light foxing to endpapers and edges of pages, spine very slightly knocked and slightly crumpled at tail otherwise a remarkably clean and fresh copy in a wrapper that is slightly sunned along edges and chipped at head and tail of spine. Lee himself mentioned how scarce this first issue was in a letter to Christina Foyle, the bookseller. "I was most touched that you took the trouble to send me the Burning Piano and most impressed that you found one (they were all impounded in Gloucestershire)". He was alluding to the passage found in the first impression copies on p. 272 which described "a fire at the piano-works almost every year, it seemed to be a good way of balancing the books". Lee was sued for libel, and the passage removed from subsequent editions. 81842
