BRITTEN, Benjamin. The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. Variations and Fugue on the Theme of Purcel. Opus 34. Hawkes Pocket Scores. WITH A SIGNED HAND-WRITTEN LETTER FROM BRITTEN EXPLAINING HOW TO REACT TO THE MUSIC IN RESPONSE TO A LETTER FROM A YOUNG FAN. 1947 Boosey & Hawkes. 1947. Small slim buff 69 page paperback. Spine blank (as issued) with small tear at tail. Title printed to front cover. LOOSELY INSERTED IS ENVELOPE SENT FROM THE MATTERHORN, ZERMATT, ADDRESSED BY HAND BY BRITTEN CONTAINING A HANDWRITTEN AND SIGNED LETTER dated Jan 27th 1947 and also in hand c/o Boosey & Hawkes Ltd. 295 Regent St. W1. The letter is written to both sides to Thelma (who was a teenager at the time) to thank her for her nice letter, saying he was glad she enjoyed the "Young Person's Guide" and that he was sorry to miss the performance at the Albert Hall as he had to be on the Continent. He goes on to tell her not worry about reading philosophical background into music too much but rather undderstand music from "a musical angle, not from a literary or philosophical one." He then goes on to tell her what he was trying to achieve with the YP's G to the O and also to say that she may see implications in it that is not necessary for other people to see the same. Thelma grew up and ran a successful book and music business in North London. Envelope is slightly worn but that and letter are easily readable and this item shows the generosity of Britten's spirit in sending such a thoughtful response to a young fan. 83146
