Volume I is a masterpiece of the art of facsimile and is bound in full Nigerian goatskin, decorated in gilt with leather onlays, decorated in gilt, red and blue, over bevelled board and with handmade laid-paper endpapers. The text is reproduced from the original manuscript in the British Library in full colour printed on Furiosa paper made in Switzerland with added gilt to initial letters and illustrations. All edges of pages gilt, red silk ribbon bookmark. The second volume is the text transcribed into a readable form with notes and an introduction. This volume is bound in matching decorated dark green cloth gilt. Very slight signs of use to leather volume otherwise a fine set in green cloth solander box with red leather label, text in black and ruled in gilt. 80311

The album has been hand-bound by Smith Settle, Yeadon, Yorkshire, using Merian Wove tone rag-content paper for the leaves, Nigerian goat-skin green leather for the spine, and light brown cloth sides foil-blocked with a design by David Eccles based on plate 38, the hawkmoth. Maria Sibylla Merian was one of the top natural history artists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Together with an introductory booklet by Harvey. Both volumes housed in a large clamshell box with leather lettering piece. 80320
