43 BIBLE. The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments: Newly Translated out of Original Tongues, and with the former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. Volume I Only. TheOld Testament. POCKET EDITION IN A HANDSOME 18th CENTURY BINDING.
Thomas Baskett, Printer to the University. Oxford. 1762. Pocket Bible. Old Testament only. 13.5 x 7.5 cm. 12mo. Very handsomely bound in full 18th century black calf with lovely detailed gilt decorations to spine and boards. "I" to spine - no other text. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Slight wear to head and tail of spine, pages slightly browned o/w a lovely copy of the duodecimal edition of the Old Testament. John Baskett was quite a character in the history of Bible printing. Dr. John Lee, who calls Baskett 'one of the greatest monopolists of bibles who ever lived,' wrote a pamphlet about the prosecution brought by Baskett on other printers in Scotland. His early edition was so carelessly printed that it was at once named 'A Baskett-full of printers' errors' which is believed to be the original source of the term 'basket case' meaning something that is full of errors/faults and is therefore not fit for purpose; an example is the Parable of the Vinegar instead of The Parable of the Vineyard and thus The Great Oxford Bible is still known as "The Vinegar Bible." The name of John Baskett is last seen on a 12mo New Testament of 1742. He died on 22 June of that year. His sons Thomas and Robert printed the Old Testament in 1743. The name of Thomas alone appears on bibles after 1744, and the imprint so continued down to 1769. He issued editions of the Prayer Book between 1746 and 1757. 71192

58 BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER. The Book of Common Prayer, And Administration of the Sacrements,And Other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church, According to the Use of the Church of England: Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David....
University Printer, Oxford. 1729 to printed title page. Printed and Sold by Sam Birt,(Successor of Mr. Robt. Whitledge, deceased) at the Bible and Ball in Ave Mary Lane, London. to extra illustrated title page. 12mo. 13 x 7.5cm. A2- [T12]. Engraved portrait frontis. of George I, who had died two years before the title page date so we are presuming that both the frontis and the extra engraved title have come from an earlier edition of the prayer book. This volume also includes 49 engraved plates, printed on only one side of paper - the reverse being blank. Bound in early 18th century full crimson morocco, decorated in blind, slightly worn along edges. All page edges gilt. Blank endpapers to front of volume contain 4 separate ownership inscriptions. One central gathering of pages and a few odd leaves are slightly proud of main contents. Inner hinges visible at front and centre but sound. Final blank leaf is loose. Apart from these faults a clean and sound copy of a pocket prayer book from the early 18th century. 82864
