Eyre & Spottiswoode. London. 1949. DW. Third reprint of third edition. An interesting Association Copy with two typed letters,signed from the author's grandson, the M.P. Winston S. Churchill, on House of Commons headed paper. Also signed by the grandson with a very friendly inscription. "Inscribed for Mr. W. A. Davies with best wishes from the author's grandson, Winston S. Churchill 20 February 1976." One of the letters thanks Mr Davies for his enquiry and states, "I enclose herewith a copy of 'The River War'. I see that your home is in Mountain Ash where my maternal grandmother, Lady Digby (maiden name Bruce) was born..." The second letter thanks Mr Davies for his kind remarks about the Bruce family which, "I know will thrill my grandmother, Lady Digby." He also adds, "I am so glad you are pleased with the copy of my grandfather's book. It was intended as a present and I trust you will accept it as such. Yours sincerely Winnston S. Churchill." The volume itself has a few signs of use and is foxed to outer edegs of pages and browned to endpapers. All the folding maps are present. A clean and sound copy in a complete wrapper that is chipped and torn along extremities but still bright.
