BIBLE. The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments: Newly Translated out of Original Tongues, and with the former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. Volume I Only. TheOld Testament. POCKET EDITION IN A HANDSOME 18th CENTURY BINDING. 1762 Thomas Baskett, Printer to the University. Oxford. 1762. Pocket Bible. Old Testament only. 13.5 x 7.5 cm. 12mo. Very handsomely bound in full 18th century black calf with lovely detailed gilt decorations to spine and boards. "I" to spine - no other text. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Slight wear to head and tail of spine, pages slightly browned o/w a lovely copy of the duodecimal edition of the Old Testament. John Baskett was quite a character in the history of Bible printing. Dr. John Lee, who calls Baskett 'one of the greatest monopolists of bibles who ever lived,' wrote a pamphlet about the prosecution brought by Baskett on other printers in Scotland. His early edition was so carelessly printed that it was at once named 'A Baskett-full of printers' errors' which is believed to be the original source of the term 'basket case' meaning something that is full of errors/faults and is therefore not fit for purpose; an example is the Parable of the Vinegar instead of The Parable of the Vineyard and thus The Great Oxford Bible is still known as "The Vinegar Bible." The name of John Baskett is last seen on a 12mo New Testament of 1742. He died on 22 June of that year. His sons Thomas and Robert printed the Old Testament in 1743. The name of Thomas alone appears on bibles after 1744, and the imprint so continued down to 1769. He issued editions of the Prayer Book between 1746 and 1757. 71192 Price:
